At present, there are altogether 1170 students in SM, including 976 undergraduates, 153 M.A.candidates and 44 Ph.D.candidates. SM is also equipped with high-quality educational hardware—a reference room with large volumes, a comprehensive laboratory in Business Administration and another one in Public Management, and 11 internship units, which meet various needs for experiments and practical teaching. The 49-people staff group consist of 21 professor or associate professors, 25 Ph.D.s ( six of them postdoctoral), and 11 M.A.s. Most of them graduated from prestigious universities in China such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Nankai University, Tianjin University, and Xi’an Jiaotong University. In the past few years, the SM teachers have taken charge of a series of national-level or provincial-level research projects, published a large number of high-quality research papers and original works, among which the most notable is “The Research on Public Management and Public Policy in the Ethnic Regions in China”, a national “985 Project”. According to the principle of “wide admission of students, solid mastery of knowledge”, SM adopts a credit-system of teaching. Since the year 2006, the undergraduate education in the disciplines of Business Administration and Public Management has followed a unified way of teaching; that is, in the first one and a half years, undergraduates should take basic courses of management regardless of the academic programs they are to choose voluntarily afterwards. Undergraduates majored in Business Administration have the right to choose among the six programs of Business Administration, Marketing, Accounting, Finance, Human Resources Management, and Tourist Management; while undergraduates majored in Public Management are to choose among Administration Management, Public Affairs Management, and Politics & Administration. Meanwhile, in order to meet the needs of advanced students, it is possible for a certain proportion of students to choose academic programs in the other discipline. From the fourth semester, students begin to take both required and optional major courses. This student-centered teaching mode not only focuses on the basic knowledge required of students, expands the communication of the knowledge in different areas, strengthens the fostering of comprehensive competence and creative ability in students, but also leaves wider space for their development, prepares them for further education and gives them more choices in future career. On the other hand, SM enhances its cooperation and communication with other first-rate universities home and abroad, and has invited a number of famous professors from Duke University, New York State University, the University of Alaska in the U.S., and scholars from some other important universities in China to come to give lectures. In the last three years, 30 of the SM undergraduates have been admitted by the graduate schools of Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing Normal University and Wuhan University with exemption of examinations; moreover, several other students have been sent to Universite Lyon 3 of France, Sandelin Park University of Gifu, Japan, and Old Westbury University of the U.S. as international exchange students. SM pays attention to the whole-person development of students in morality, civilization, and physical and psychological health. It manages to create an influential academic atmosphere for students, and encourages them to actively take part in social practices and various extracurricular activities. SM enthusiastically applies for all kinds of awards set by the university for its undergraduates and graduates, such as “Excellent Undergraduate”, “Excellent Undergraduate Leader”, “Excellent Graduate”, “Excellent Graduate Leader”, “Baogang Steel Education Fund”, and even “National Award for University Students”. In order to help students from poor families, SM will provide them with loans or periodical subsidies according to the national policy, so that they can continue with their study and life. In recent years, SM has provided a lot of professionals in the field of Administration Management, Corporate Management, Human Resources Management, Marketing and Accounting for Beijing and the other regions in China, which gives it a good reputation in governmental departments and commercial companies, and makes it rather competitive in the talent market. Some of its students have even become experts in their working fields.
SM is a school with a brief history, yet it is energetic and vibrant. It will try to develop its undergraduate education as well as its graduate education, improve its plan of multi-layer, multi-type, and multi-form education, and set up a scientific, standard, and new-style teaching mode, laying the foundation for building a high-level academic institution. |
